NOTES OF INTEREST:
  • The Science Standards have been revised and the new versions are posted.  The changes are very minor and did not affect pld's or test items.  Some of them were reworded for clarity.  Also, the standards for Earth Science, Environmental Science and Human Anatomy & Physiology have been approved.
  • The reclassification of Pluto as a dwarf planet gives us a unique opportunity to help the students understand something about the nature of science.  Too often students (and adults) see science knowledge as a set of facts which are definite and unchangeable forever.  However, science knowledge develops and our understandings are modified based on new information and interpretations.  When Pluto was discovered, it was thought to be larger than Earth and we had little knowledge of all the diverse objects farther out.  As new observations were made, it became necessary to develop a more effective classification system to organize our understanding of objects in the solar system.  This new classification system is shaking up one of our understandings about the world around us, but then so did the work of Copernicus and Galileo when they suggested that the sun did not revolve around the earth.
