A travel trunk is a learning experience on wheels – a rolling suitcase of materials from the Atlanta History Center. Each trunk offers a variety of primary resources with suggested lesson plans and activities. The following trunks are available: Native Lands – Includes a slide show with narrative, a video introducing Southeastern Native American history; maps, music, reproduction artifacts and other materials for interpretation of local Native American culture. Georgia Pioneers – Explore the life of Georgia’s settlers with farm tools, household objects, reproduction school books, and suggested activities for hand crafts, music, games and more. Includes a slide tour of the Tullie Smith Farm. Atlanta in Pictures – Photographs from the Atlanta History Center archives illustrate themes of transportation, economic development, and urbanization. Also includes copies of historic newspapers, maps of Atlanta and books. World War I and the 1920s – Includes a reproduction stereopticon with views, newspaper accounts of major events, music, photographs, and a look at life in Atlanta with the residents of the History Center’s Swan House.World War II – Military and civilian experiences are explored with newspapers, uniforms and soldier’s gear, rationing activities, posters, maps, and the story of Atlanta school kids who helped build a battleship. Civil Rights -- Photographs, maps, newspapers and art illuminate this era. Trunk contents include Reconstruction and Jim Crow resources, suggested activities for classroom presentations and oral history project guidelines. Includes portions of Southern Regional Council’s oral history tape compilation, featuring the Atlanta story.
